On March 15, 2024, the South Shore community celebrated a powerful new chapter in storytelling with the grand opening of the Sisters in Cinema Media Arts Center. Rooted in the mission of uplifting Black women and gender-nonconforming media makers, the center officially opened its doors on 75th Street, offering a dedicated space for creativity, education, and community connection.
The celebration kicked off with a ribbon-cutting ceremony accompanied by Chicago’s former mayor, Lori Lightfoot, and continued with weekend-long events, including an engaging open house, hands-on workshops, and a special brunch honoring media makers. Attendees explored the center’s dynamic features, including a 35-seat theater, gallery spaces, computer lab, and archival resources designed to support emerging filmmakers and creatives.
With programming ranging from screenings and panels to training sessions on filmmaking using mobile phones, the Sisters in Cinema Media Arts Center is more than a venue — it’s a cultural anchor and a bold investment in the future of South Shore. The grand opening marked not only a physical space coming to life, but a vision nearly 30 years in the making, now fully realized.
